Rocks duo hit the heights to clip Sheffield's wings
ROCKS hot-shot Blake Shelton had a close-shave with the razor before cutting Sheffield Sharks down to size with a candidate for shot of the season.
With less than half a minute remaining and the match still in the balance, Shelton - sporting a new mohican haircut - picked up the ball a yard inside the Sharks' half.
What happened next had to be seen to be believed. With two seconds left on the shot-clock, Shelton launched an outrageous three-point attempt - which to the astonishment of everyone present - dropped into the basket.
To say words cannot do Shelton's feat justice would be an understatement - only an howitzer lauched from one basket to the other will top this.
You could clearly see the stuffing had been knocked out of Sheffield as they had given the Rocks a thorough examination.
Many wondered if the pair would match the thriller they served up in the BBL Trophy a fortnight back.
Not only did they do so, they even topped it with Shelton's heroics, tempers fraying and referee Chris Dodds not only having to tell a Sheffield fan to calm down but also order a certain photographer off the court after said snapper had strayed too far in getting the picture to your left.
The 93-88 win takes the Rocks back to the top of the BBL table but a major talking point was the snazzy haircuts donned by Shelton and team-mate Chi Lewis-Parry.
Shelton said: "I can assure everyone that these were not the result of a drunken bet or one of the other players telling us that we would look good.
"We were both just bored really. I guess we just tired each other out of beating each other on various XBOX and PS3 games.
"It just cropped up in conversation - 'hey let's shave our heads as that would be great'.
"Just for the sake of something different I suppose but after a night like this, maybe it's a new good luck charm."
And on that wonder-shot of his he added: "Nothing special. I saw two seconds on the shot-clock and - with Sterling (Davis) shouting at me to hit it - I just threw it in.
"Maybe it's the best shot of my career but it's certainly the longest one."
Shelton returned to the BBL last summer after a stint with German club Chemnitz which produced a mixed experience for the American.
He continued: "I had joined a side which had just won promotion to the German Bundesliga .
"Naturally, they wanted to preserve their top-flight status so were defensively-minded.
"But, my time there did improve my defence so even though I felt my year there could have been better, something productive did come out of it."
